Want to Run for Council? Come to our Candidate Information Session
Innisfil, ON – If you’ve been thinking about running for council in the Municipal Election this fall, mark your calendar for Friday, April 20, 2018. Staff from the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and the Town of Innisfil will be hosting a Candidate Information Session for those interested in running as a candidate in the 2018 Municipal Election. The information session is for anyone who is contemplating filing nomination papers to run for Council or Trustee. Information will be provided about on the process, as well as the recent changes to the Municipal Elections Act. The session will take place beginning at 7:00 p.m. in Town Hall Council Chambers (2101 Innisfil Beach Road). All are welcome and pre-registration is not required. Topics covered at the session will include:
- Roles and responsibilities of elected officials, staff, and Third Party Advertisers
- Nomination process and eligibility to run
- Candidate and third party advertiser duties
- General campaign rules and election finances
- Compliance audits and penalties
Due to the various changes enacted to the Municipal Elections Act, this session will also clarify the election process to newcomers and previous participants alike.
Changes include the timelines for nominations (May 1 – July 27 at 2 p.m.), the requirement for candidates to gather 25 signatures of endorsement before filing and changes to contribution limits.
Election Day is October 22, 2018 and nominations will be accepted during regular business hours from Tuesday, May 1st to Friday, July 27th, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. By attending the Candidate Information Session, prospective candidates will become familiarized with the election requirements.
