Are you interested in becoming a volunteer firefighter? As a volunteer firefighter, you'll work under the supervision of full-time firefighters to attend emergencies, administer First Aid/CPR, and operate and maintain equipment and fire stations.

Please note that we do not accept applications unless an active recruitment is ongoing.

Eligibility

To be a volunteer firefighter with Innisfil Fire & Rescue Services, you need to live within an 8 km radius of one of our fire stations and meet the following requirements:

  • Be physically fit
  • Have a valid driver's licence
  • Have a secondary school diploma or recognized equivalent
  • Knowledge of health and safety requirements

Although not mandatory, preference will be given to applicants who have:

  • A DZ driver's licence
  • Standard First Aid certificate
  • Prior firefighting experience

Recruitment process

We would like to thank all applicants, however, we will only contact short-listed candidates to complete the recruitment process. If you are selected for the recruitment process, you'll need to complete the following:

  • Aptitude test
  • Interview
  • Fitness test
  • Volunteer recruitment training program

To become a volunteer firefighter, you must pass through all stages of the recruitment process.

What to expect as a volunteer firefighter

If you're selected to become a firefighter, you'll be expected to maintain the following mandatory attendance requirements:

  • Training 75%
  • Emergency response 30%

The work of a volunteer firefighter is very demanding, requiring you to carry a pager, be on-call and available, as much as possible, day and night, weekends and holidays.

Tasks

On-the-job tasks include:

  • Carrying, lifting and pulling
  • Climbing stairs and ladders
  • Wearing self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA)
  • Working in confined spaces
  • Operating emergency vehicles

Environment factors

As a volunteer firefighter, you may be exposed to the following environments:

  • Toxic gases and chemicals
  • Wet and damp conditions
  • Extreme temperature variations

Stress

Firefighting requires you to go from minimal physical activity to the peak of physical activity while responding to and performing firefighting or related tasks. This can be both mentally and physically exhausting.
