Innisfil, ON – Thursday, September 28 is Ontario’s very first Test your Smoke Alarm Day. Innisfil is excited to participate in this new province-wide initiative by encouraging all residents to be proactive when it comes to fire safety in their homes.

In 2022, there were 133 fire fatalities in the province, the most in 20 years. “We have to work together to bring these numbers down and stay safe,” says Brent Thomas, Fire Chief, Town of Innisfil/Town of Bradford West Gwillimbury. “We truly hope that homeowners will take the time to test their smoke alarms and help us help you.” When smoke alarms are in working order, it gives families the best chance to be aware and therefore firefighters more time to respond accordingly.

Homeowners can test their smoke alarms with the simple push of a button. Batteries should be replaced at least once a year for alarms that have replaceable batteries. Alarms with 10-year batteries or hard wired to your electrical system should ideally be tested monthly but at least every six months. “We urge Innisfil residents to use this day to educate family members and get on the same page,” says Chief Thomas. “Take a moment to plan an escape route, check in with elderly family members, and ultimately protect you and your loved ones in case of a fire.”

This new Saved By The Beep campaign is a reminder to prioritize what’s most important—your safety,” says Mayor Lynn Dollin. “When we’re checking in with each other, we’re keeping that sense of community strong and ultimately, families safe. Smoke alarms save lives, and you have the power to give your family the best chance to escape safely.”

Snap a photo of you or your family members testing your smoke alarms and post it to social media using the hashtag #SavedByTheBeep.
