Innisfil helps educate voters and candidates in the upcoming municipal election
Innisfil, Ontario – The next municipal and school board election is happening on October 24, 2022 in the Town of Innisfil. To help prepare residents, the Town is hosting information sessions and created a comprehensive election website to deliver important information on voting, running, or advertising in the upcoming election.
“Elected officials make important choices for their community and the upcoming election is an opportunity for residents to choose who makes those decisions,” said the Town’s Deputy Clerk Patty Thoma. “Whether you’re a voter or candidate, it’s important that we have as many diverse voices and perspectives as possible involved in local government. We encourage those who are looking to run in the election to register for our upcoming information sessions to understand the campaign period and the role of council.”
Innisfil, in partnership with the municipalities of Bradford-West Gwillimbury, New Tecumseth, Adjala-Tosorontio and Essa, is hosting the first candidate and third-party advertiser information session on April 7 at 6 p.m. Anyone interested in running as a candidate or registering as a third-party advertiser is encouraged to attend this virtual session, where a guest speaker from the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing will provide an overview of the Municipal Elections Act. Discussion includes the role of council, municipal staff and school board trustees, key dates, general campaign rules, candidate duties, eligibility and more.
The second information session is being held on May 12 at 6 p.m. with municipal coach and former municipal solicitor Fred Dean. In this virtual session, attendees will get a realistic picture of the scope of duties, workload, and responsibilities of a member of council.
These presentations will benefit newcomers to the municipal election process, as well as those who have participated in past elections. Registration for both sessions is required online, or by contacting elections@innisfil.ca or 705-436-3710. Opportunities for more informal, drop-in sessions with the Clerk’s Office will be announced in the future.
