I first joined the Town of Innisfil in the summer of 2022 as part of the Parks and Recreation team. My responsibilities focused on maintaining our municipal parks and green spaces, a role that allowed me to contribute significantly to crafting a clean and welcoming environment for our community. The meaningful work and the camaraderie brought me back in 2023. There is a distinct fulfillment in working outdoors within my own community, recognizing that my efforts directly influence the quality of life for those around me. The pride experienced from seeing a playground and its green spaces in pristine condition and knowing that I played a part in the Town's well-being, was truly rewarding.

It’s not just a job. It’s about the relationships formed, lunchtime conversations, the supportive environment, and the sense of belonging that makes coming to work enjoyable. The teamwork and shared purpose are palpable, and it’s clear that we’re all working towards the same goal—enhancing the lives of those in our community.

In the summer of 2024, my role with the Town evolved. After completing my third year of university, studying Forensic Science with a Specialization in Law and Policing, I sought a position that aligned more closely with my future aspirations in policing and community well-being. Stepping into the role of a Community Standards Officer Co-op heightened my involvement with the community. In this role, I’ve been enforcing regulations, ensuring safety, and engaging actively with residents and visitors. This position has been incredibly rewarding, as it placed me at the forefront of community interactions. I strongly believe in the importance of community education over punitive measures when appropriate, and the discretion granted to officers in handling situations fosters an environment where simple conversations can correct misunderstandings.

The support and mentorship within the Community Standards department have been invaluable. It’s an environment where questions are encouraged, growth is nurtured, and the skills gained are applicable both within the Town and beyond. Many co-op students have been successful in obtaining full-time roles or careers in policing, driven by a passion for community service. Working with the South Simcoe Police Service (SSPS) on certain occasions has also allowed me to build connections that will be beneficial in my future career. In this role, we’re not just enforcing rules—we’re building trust, one interaction at a time.

Whether your interests lie in community standards, parks, or any other service area, there truly is something here for everyone. Working for the Town of Innisfil feels like being part of a community within a community. From Town events to employee recognition, the relationships formed go beyond mere colleagues—they become friendships. Whether you’re seeking a long-term career or a stepping stone in your journey, the Town is a welcoming place that truly values its employees. Having lived in Innisfil since I was 8 years old, holding a position with the Town feels like a full-circle moment. It’s an honour to give back to the community that has given so much to me.
