Metrolinx Corridor Work - Barrie Line in Innisfil
Essential upgrades are underway at Killarney Beach Road to support the electrification of the Barrie GO Line. This Metrolinx project will prepare for the future overhead catenary system (OCS), enabling cleaner and more efficient train service. The GO Expansion will transform the GO rail network from a commuter service into an all-day, rapid system.
Underground utility upgrades and settlement monitoring work will occur:
- Start date: January 21, 2025
- End date: March 31, 2025
- Work hours: Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Work details
- Installing underground electrical wires via 24-inchcHorizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) (110 metres in length, 8.4 metres maximum depth). Boreholes will facilitate this process.
- 5 utility poles will be removed and 8 new poles for updated alignments will be installed.
- Settlement monitoring installations will track any potential ground movement and ensure safety.
- Monitoring may continue throughout construction and for up to one-year post-completion to ensure long-term stability.
What to expect
- Preliminary Work: Locating and marking underground utilities and daylighting buried assets to ensure safe drilling operations.
- Core Activities: Residents will see a drill rig and supporting equipment onsite for several weeks, with noticeable vibrations and noise during work hours. Drilling and machinery will comply with regulations.
- Utility Services: No disruptions are anticipated.
- Restoration: The area will be restored to its original condition after project completion.
- Traffic and Pedestrian Impacts: Temporary lane closures on Killarney Beach Road during working hours with clear signage and safe detours. Sidewalks will remain accessible, with occasional minor rerouting. Flaggers will ensure pedestrian safety near active zones.
