Community Building Fund grant used to improve Morgan Russell Memorial Arena and Community Centre
Innisfil, ON – On Friday, the Hon. Andrea Khanjin, MPP Barrie-Innisfli, had an opportunity to tour and hear about the impact that a $324,700 Community Building Fund grant had on the Town of Innisfil’s plans to make key improvements to the Morgan Russell Memorial Arena and Community Centre. The grant which, was awarded in late 2021 by the Government of Ontario and the Ontario Trillium Foundation, supported many projects to ensure this facility is a safe, welcoming and accessible place for all.
“Through today’s funding announcement, our government is ensuring important updates to the Morgan Russell Memorial Arena and Community Centre, allowing generations of local residents to enjoy recreational activities,” said the Hon. Andrea Khanjin, MPP, Barrie-Innisfil. “The facility is a tribute to the ultimate sacrifice of South Simcoe Police Officer Morgan Russell, who grew up playing hockey at this very arena.”
Funds from the Community Building Fund Capital granting stream program enabled the Town to replace the building’s cooling system and fire alarms. In addition, repair the roof, and to purchase and install new exterior and interior doors, flooring and ceiling tiles at the site, amongst other upgrades.
“With the funds we received, we were able to do many upgrades including replacing the chiller, brine pump and expansion tank as well as upgrading the accessibility ramp to the facility,” says Mayor Lynn Dollin. “Additionally, the funds allowed us to replace toilets with high efficiency models, lighting and shower upgrades and significant improvements to the banquet hall. None of this would have been possible without the support of the provincial government and the Ontario Trillium Foundation.”
The Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF), an agency of the Government of Ontario, and one of Canada’s leading granting foundations celebrates 40 years of grant-making in Ontario and making a lasting impact in communities. Last year, OTF invested over $110M into 1,022 community projects and partnerships. Visit otf.ca to learn more.
