Carbon monoxide (CO) is a dangerous gas you cannot see or smell. It is created by fuel-burning sources such as furnaces, fireplaces, stoves, and vehicles in garages. Because CO can cause serious illness or death, the laws in Ontario are changing to help keep everyone safe.

What’s changing?

Starting January 1, 2026, you must have a CO alarm:

  • Next to every sleeping area
  • On every storey (floor) that does not have a bedroom (main floors and basements)

These requirements apply to all homes, including older ones. Even if you already have CO alarms, you may need to add more.

Why this is important

  • CO is invisible and odourless
  • It can build up inside your home without you knowing it
  • A CO alarm provides early warning so you can get outside safely

What you should do now

  1. Check your alarms: Make sure CO alarms are installed in the required locations. Combination smoke/CO alarms are allowed, as long as there is one on every level of the home.
  2. Plan ahead: Buy and install extra alarms before January 1, 2026. If you rent, notify your landlord.
  3. Maintain your alarms: Test alarms regularly and replace them before they expire (typically every 5–10 years).
  4. Inspect appliances annually: Have a qualified technician check furnaces, fireplaces, and other fuel-burning appliances. Make sure vents are not blocked by snow or debris.

Note: Multi-unit houses are subject to additional requirements under the updated Ontario Fire Code.
