Innisfil, ON – Innisfil Council will donate land to Habitat for Humanity Huronia (H4HH) for the construction of an environmentally-sustainable affordable housing development – an extraordinary measure that will help local families reach their home ownership dreams. This week, Council unanimously voted in favour of the project that would see lands located at 3122 25th Sideroad donated to the cause.
“This Council is proud to bring these forward-thinking, environmentally-sustainable affordable housing options that can be absolutely life-changing for residents who need assistance,” said Innisfil Mayor Lynn Dollin. “Especially during these trying times when we are experiencing an economic slowdown, affordable housing options like these will be key to helping many of our hardest-hit residents bounce back.”
The future development will be built to the Passive House standard – a construction standard that results in homes with 90% more energy efficient than a standard code-built home. Passive House homes are typically quieter, more comfortable and result in lower monthly utility costs for the homeowner – making living in these homes even more affordable.
The design of the project, including parking, unit numbers and height, will be determined through discussions with neighbours and the public planning review process. The intent of the project is to provide affordable homeownership to as many families as possible.
The next steps in the process will be for staff to finalize and bring to Council the land transfer by-law, and for the project to begin the public planning review process for Council consideration. If all goes according to plan, town staff and H4HH hope for construction to begin in late 2021.
